"How much does an SEO consultant cost in Los Angeles?" The honest answer is that it depends, but the range isn't random. It follows experience, specialization and what you're actually buying. Here's how pricing works, using public survey data and what I see working with LA companies.
Average SEO consultant rates
Ahrefs' SEO pricing survey is one of the largest public data sets on SEO pricing. It found a clear gap by provider type:
| Provider type | Average hourly rate (Ahrefs survey) |
|---|---|
| Consultancies | about $171 |
| Agencies | about $99 |
| Freelancers | about $72 |
Rates also rise with experience, from about $73 an hour for SEOs in business two years or less to about $118 for those with 10+ years.
These are national averages. In Los Angeles, senior consultants and specialists in technical, enterprise, ecommerce and migration work typically sit above them, in line with other high-cost US markets.
The three pricing models
- Hourly: for advisory calls and small, undefined tasks. Easy to start, hard to budget.
- Project: for audits, migrations and strategy work with a clear scope. See what a Los Angeles SEO audit includes.
- Monthly retainer: for ongoing strategy or fractional leadership. Usually the best value for continuous work.
What drives the price in LA
- Your competition. LA categories like legal, healthcare, beauty and entertainment are crowded, which means more work to break in.
- Seniority. Experience costs more per hour and usually saves more than the difference.
- Specialization. Technical, ecommerce and migration work cost more than general SEO. See technical SEO, ecommerce SEO and migrations.
- Site size and stakes. A 50-page site and a 500,000-page media library are different jobs.
Consultant vs freelancer vs agency
They're different products. Freelancers are cheaper per hour and good for defined tasks. Agencies bring a team for execution at volume. Consultants bring senior judgment and strategy. Many LA companies use a consultant to set direction and an agency or in-house team to execute.
How to judge value
- Ask what you'll have at the end: a ranked plan, fixed issues, a trained team, measurable results.
- Ask who does the work.
- Compare against the cost of the alternative: a wrong hire, a failed relaunch or another flat year.
How I price
I don't publish a rate card because scopes vary too much. Audits and migrations are fixed-price projects. Ongoing strategy is monthly. You get a clear scope and price after a short intro call, in person if I'm in LA.
Frequently asked questions
For ongoing work, usually yes.
Very low rates usually mean less experience or task-level work rather than strategy.
